総評 

ヘンリー・ディヴィット・ソローの『森の生活』が発表されたのは1854年、今から172年前のことです。ソローは人間の一生を四季に喩え、自然に没入することで、人々がそれぞれに内省を深め、社会をより客観的かつ冷静に理解することを望み、本書を著しました。私たちの世界は今、彼が生きた時代以上に、あらゆる局面でおいて大きな転換期を迎えています。混乱、混沌を意味する「カオス」、しかし、この言葉には同時に、「空＝真っ白な世界」、新たな時代の前兆の意味もあると思います。

軽井沢フォトフェストはその創設当初より、軽井沢という祝福された土地が語りかける“静かな声”を写真で炙り出すことを活動目的としてまいりました。本年、この“静かな声”を改めて「軽井沢レガシー」定義し、KFF Awardのテーマで公募しました。おかげさまで、軽井沢周辺のみならず、世界各地から寄せられた作品は見応えのある、”軽井沢の声”に共鳴するもので、新たな時代における写真の役割を予感させるものでした。

ともすると、私たちは身近であるがゆえに気づかず、見慣れていることで見過ごしてしまう事象があります。今回のグランプリ作品、軽井沢賞、優秀賞はいずれも私たちが日常の中で忘れがちな“大切なこと”を気づかせ、その前に佇み、自らを振り返る時間を与えてくれる作品たちです。

審査を担ってくださった審査員の方々への心からの敬意と感謝を込めて、各賞を下記の通り、発表いたします。

Chief Curator’s Comments

Henry David Thoreau’s Walden was published in 1854, 172 years ago.
In it, Thoreau likens a human life to the four seasons, and through immersion in nature, he sought to encourage individuals to deepen their introspection and to understand society with greater objectivity and clarity.

Today, our world is undergoing a transformation even more profound than in his time, across all dimensions.
The word “chaos” suggests disorder and confusion, yet it can also be understood as “emptiness” — a blank, open space — a sign of the emergence of a new era.

Since its founding, Karuizawa Foto Fest has aimed to reveal, through photography, the “quiet voice” of Karuizawa — a place uniquely blessed with natural and cultural richness.
This year, we redefined that “quiet voice” as Karuizawa Legacy, and invited submissions under this theme for the KFF Award.

We were fortunate to receive compelling works not only from the Karuizawa region, but from around the world — works that resonate with this “voice of Karuizawa” and suggest the evolving role of photography in a new era.

Often, it is precisely because something is familiar that we fail to notice it, or overlook it altogether.
The Grand Prize, Town of Karuizawa Award, and Genre Winners and Commendation Awards presented this year all remind us of those “essential things” we tend to forget in our daily lives. They invite us to pause, stand before them, and reflect upon ourselves.

自然・風景部門賞

本作には、生きとし生けるものが織りなす「命の循環」が静かに、しかし強く写し出されています。蕎麦畑のかたわら、先人たちが生きた証として佇む遺構に、冬を耐え抜いた常緑の松と、春の訪れを告げる満開の桜が寄り添う。その鮮やかなコントラストは、単なる視覚的な美を超え、幾重にも重なる「時間の積層」を感じさせます。背景の山々から放たれるのは、芽吹き始めたばかりの繊細で瑞々しいエネルギーです。

本作は、この土地が持つ記憶と鑑賞者の経験が交差する場となり、一人ひとりの内面から新たな物語（レガシー）を紡ぎ出していくでしょう。技術革新が加速する現代において、豊かな自然と調和する「人間の新たな営み」への思索を促す、深い包容力に満ちた作品です。

This work quietly yet powerfully conveys the “cycle of life” woven by all living things.
Beside a buckwheat field, remnants left behind by those who came before stand as traces of lives once lived. Evergreen pines that have endured the winter are joined by cherry blossoms in full bloom, heralding the arrival of spring.

This vivid contrast goes beyond mere visual beauty, evoking layers upon layers of accumulated time.
From the mountains in the background emerges a delicate, fresh energy—just beginning to awaken.

The work becomes a point of intersection between the memory held within this land and the viewer’s own experience, giving rise to new personal narratives—new legacies—from within each individual.

In an age of accelerating technological advancement, this is a deeply embracing work that invites reflection on new ways of human existence in harmony with the natural world.

静物・建築部門賞

深い緑の闇と静かな光に包まれた鎮守の森は、日本古来の自然信仰を静かに、しかし力強く物語っています。草木や岩、そのすべてに「八百万の神」が宿ると信じてきた日本人にとって、神社とは単なる建築物ではなく、俗世と神域を隔てる境界であり、自然と対話するための神聖な場です。本作は、その目に見えない気配を見事に視覚化しています。

手前から奥へとのびる石畳は、鑑賞者を誘い込む導線となり、左右に配された石燈籠と奥に佇む鳥居のシンメトリックな構成が、空間に建築的な秩序と安定感をもたらしています。また、夜の闇に浮かび上がる厳かな光によって、灯籠と石畳を照らす冷ややかな光と影のコントラストが、石の質感や境内の静寂を際立たせ、極めて優れた造形美を生み出しています。ただそこにある風景を写すにとどまらず、幽玄の気配そのものを写し取った秀作です。

The shrine forest, enveloped in deep green darkness and quiet light, speaks softly yet powerfully of Japan’s ancient nature-based beliefs.
For the Japanese, who have long believed that yaoyorozu no kami—countless deities—reside in all things, from plants to stones, a shrine is not merely an architectural structure. It is a threshold that separates the everyday world from the sacred, a place for communion with nature. This work beautifully renders that invisible presence visible.

The stone path extending from foreground to background draws the viewer inward, while the symmetrical arrangement of stone lanterns and the torii gate beyond brings a sense of architectural order and stability to the space.
Illuminated within the darkness of night, the solemn light creates a striking contrast of cool highlights and shadow across the lanterns and stone path, emphasizing the texture of the stone and the stillness of the sacred grounds, resulting in a composition of remarkable formal beauty.

Rather than simply depicting a scene, this work captures the very essence of yūgen—a profound and subtle sense of mystery.

画角は真上から。天井の高い家なのでしょう。床に寝転び、ポーズを決めたお子さんの目には力がこもっています。撮影者とお子さんの間で交わされた会話が聞こえてくるような写真、素晴らしいです！「もうちょっと上、腕をピンと伸ばして」と頭上から飛んでくる声に、お子さんは全身で応えています。この二人だからこそ分かち合った特別な時間、忘れられない瞬間が刻む写真の力がここには見事に凝縮しています。刻を経ることで味わいを増した焦茶のフローリングや椅子、こどもがぶつかっても怪我をしないように装着された石のテーブルの角、卓上に置かれたさまざまな飲み物のボトルや飲みかけのカップ、そして長玉のレンズが装着された一眼レフ。避暑地の時間とご家族の暮らしの手触りが伝わってくる一枚。僕はいつも、「この人が幸せになりますように」と祈ってシャッターを切っています。僕はこの一枚のように、写真は誰かを幸せをもたらすものであった欲しいと思っています。

The image is taken from directly above—perhaps in a home with a high ceiling.
Lying on the floor, the child holds a pose, their eyes filled with quiet intensity. It is a wonderful photograph, one in which you can almost hear the exchange between photographer and subject.
“Just a little higher—stretch your arms straight,” a voice calls from above, and the child responds with their whole body.

What we see here is a special moment shared only between these two—
an unforgettable instant in which the power of photography is beautifully distilled.

The dark wooden flooring and chairs, deepened in tone with age;
the stone table with softened corners to protect a child from injury;
the bottles and half-finished drinks resting on the table;
and a DSLR fitted with a telephoto lens—
all these elements convey the texture of family life and the gentle rhythm of time in a summer retreat.

Whenever I press the shutter, I do so with the hope that the person before me will find happiness.
Like this photograph, I believe that photography has the power to bring happiness to someone.

優秀賞 鉄道・街道・旅部門賞

「軽井沢」という地名には避暑地としての「旅」のはじまりを感じます。旅は日常の生活から少し身を離すことによって、非日常の何かに開かれる瞬間が宿る時です。

樹木が生い茂る小道。少し薄い空気のなかに射しこむ高原の光と木蔭。

軽井沢にあっては当たり前かもしれない景色が、他所の人にとっては旅に来たと思える感覚を呼び覚ます。この写真には、そうした空気感がとらえられているように思います。

鉄道・街道・旅部門では、夕日に染まる軽井沢駅や旧駅舎、佐久鯉、桜、紅葉、雪景色など、四季折々の事物の姿や、そこにいる人たちの姿が多く寄せられました。そのなかで、特段にはなにも写っていない風景から、旅の朝にふと感じるような清冽な感覚を伝えるこの写真は浮き上がっているように見えました。

The name “Karuizawa” evokes the beginning of a journey—particularly one associated with a summer retreat.
A journey is a moment when, by stepping slightly away from everyday life, we open ourselves to something beyond the ordinary.

A path lined with dense trees.
Highland light filtering through the branches into the slightly thin air, casting gentle shadows.

What may feel like an ordinary scene in Karuizawa can, for a visitor, awaken the sense of having arrived somewhere different—somewhere removed from daily life.
This photograph seems to capture precisely that atmosphere.

In the Railway, Roads & Journeys category, we received many images depicting Karuizawa Station at sunset, the former station building, Saku koi, sakura , autumn foliage, and snowy landscapes—scenes that reflect the changing seasons, along with the people within them.

Among these, this photograph stood out for its quiet restraint.
Rather than relying on striking subject matter, it conveys a clarity reminiscent of a morning during travel—an understated yet deeply evocative sensation.

It was a pleasure and an honor to be part of this jury. I truly enjoyed the journey it took me on thru Japan. That was a special blessing.

The single images reflected not only the physical beauty of Japan and its people but also the aesthetics of mono-no-aware. The spring landscape spoke to me both of life renewing itself as well as death, which is always present, making life even more precious. For such a simple image to convey such deep thoughts is very impressive. The dark and moody entrance to the shrine is one I could live with and receive its mystery every day. The child playing on the floor contrasts so perfectly with the adult world on the table and the brightly lit road is always a beckoning into an unknown future.

The stories in the Series Category were such a wonderful surprise. The Siberian village story When the Birch Leaves Shine, is photographed with such tenderness and beauty. The images speak of aging, friendship, and loss with few words. And the very imaginative and artful free bird  shows us a poetic form of storytelling that leads us on a magical journey of fog and soft light.

I congratulate all the photographers who made these images. Thank you for sharing your vision.

KFFの審査員の一員になれたことは、喜びであり光栄でした。日本を写真を通して巡るこの旅を心から楽しめました。それは特別な恵みでした。

これらの写真には、日本とその人々の物理的な美しさだけでなく、物の哀れみの美学も映し出されていました。春の風景は、再生する生命と、常にそこにあり、生命を一層尊いものにする死の両方を私に語りかけてくれました。これほどシンプルな一枚の写真が、これほど深い想いを伝えるとは、実に感銘を受けました。暗く、物悲しい雰囲気の神社の入り口の写真は、私がそこに住み、その神秘を毎日受け入れてもよいと思えるような場所です。床で遊ぶ子供は、テーブルの上の大人たちの世界と完璧な対比を成しており、明るく照らされた道は、常に未知の未来へと誘う手招きのように感じられます。

組写真の作品群は、実に素晴らしい驚きでした。シベリアの村を舞台にした『When the Birch Leaves Shine』（白樺の葉が輝くとき）は、優しさと美しさに満ちた写真です。言葉は最小限に抑えられながらも、老い、友情、そして喪失について語っています。また、非常に独創的で芸術的な『free bird』は、霧と柔らかな光に包まれた魔法のような旅へと誘う、詩的な物語の形式を見せてくれます。
