弊社、AKIO NAGASAWA Gallery | Publishingは、主に日本の戦後作家を、展覧会の開催と作品集の出版を通じて国内外へ紹介する活動をしています。

指針としては、作家の活動に対してギャラリーが触媒となり、共に新しい作品を生みだし、その作家の活動歴、ひいては芸術の歴史に参画したいと考えています。例えば、作家が構想はしていたが様々な理由で叶わなかったプロジェクトの実現や、弊社の特徴を活用した作家に対する新しい試みの働きかけなど、弊社とだったからできたと作家に言って頂けるような活動を目指したいと思います。

弊社は銀座・青山・虎ノ門と三つのスペースで活動をしており、それぞれの場所性を念頭に、そこに集う人々の属姓も考慮したプログラムを組んでおります。トラディッショナルな街、銀座ではキャリアのあるマスターアーティストを、ファッショナブルな街、青山ではエッジの効いた国内外の若手を中心に、オフィス街である虎ノ門では普段あまり芸術に触れることとのない観客にもアピールできる作風の作家で……という感じです。

作家が新作を発表する際、基本的に美術館ではなくギャラリーが多いかと思います。いずれその作品の評価が高まり、美術館で展示される日がくるやもしれませんが、芸術の歴史、最初の一歩はギャラリーの展示から始まると考えます。その意味で、展覧会の開催は毎回とてもエキサイティングな経験となります。展覧会の企画に関していつも考えていることは、観客が展示空間に身を置いた時、彼らに作家の持つ世界観をいかにダイレクトに伝えることができるかということです。まさしくShowとして観客にインパクトを与え魅了することができるかが、展覧会企画のキモだと考えています。

また、実際の展覧会と並行してONLINE Exhibitionも展開しております。これはバーチャル上ではなく、実際にギャラリーにて作品を展示し展覧会を作り、それを撮影・編集した後、web上で公開するものです。既に30個以上の映像を公開しております。この試みは、物理的に展覧会へ来ることのできない観客に対して、作家のエッセンスを伝えるためのツールとして考えています。

展覧会の企画と同等に作品集の出版にも力を注いでいます。美術を鑑賞するには、実際の作品に対峙することがベストだとは思います。しかしながら、展覧会はその時、その場所に行かなければ観ることはできません。翻って書籍の形であれば、手に入れさえすればいつでもどこでも見ることができます。また、展覧会は長くても数カ月で消えていってしまいますが、書籍は燃やしたり捨てたりしなければこの世に永久に残ります。地理的には地球の裏側にいるまだ見ぬ観客への作品の世界を運ぶことができますし、時間的には10年後、20年後、もしかしたら100年後の未来の観客との懸け橋となり得ます。　

もちろん両者は別物です。展覧会の空間に身を置いたときに体感する作家の熱量、それは何物にも代えられません。作家の世界観を体感するには展覧会の環境がベストでしょう。しかし実際のところ、新しい作家を知るきっかけとしては作品集を通じてという場合が多いかと思います。その時、作品集のデザインや紙質、編集などの書籍としての佇まいがその作家の評価に少なからず影響するでしょう。いくら作品が素晴らしくても、それが収録された作品集のクオリティーがそぐわなければ意味がありません。書籍はとてもフィジカルなものです。装丁、造本、レイアウト、編集などのデザインが施され、指を使ってページをめくって展開していく時間軸を持ちます。その為、ただのカタログではなく、書籍の特性を活かしながら作家の世界観を体現し封じ込めた、オブジェとしての作品集の制作が重要と考えます。弊社はこれからも展覧会と出版の両輪を通じて、優れた日本の作家を世界に紹介していきたいと考えております。

AKIO NAGASAWA Gallery | Publishing has been organizing exhibitions and publishing art books mainly by Japanese postwar artists, with the aim to introduce them to audiences in Japan and abroad.

As a guiding principle behind our work, we want to participate in the personal histories of artists, or in art history at large, by providing gallery space that functions as a catalyst for artistic activities, while also creating new works together with artists. By realizing projects, they have conceived but were unable to bring to fruition in the past for various reasons or inspiring them to try new things with the support of our unique activities and assets, we wish to encourage artists to engage in projects that they can only realize together with us.

Our company operates three galleries, at Ginza, Aoyama and Toranomon respectively, each of which offers programs tailored to suit the types of people in these very different types of area. In the rather traditional environment of the Ginza district, we showcase experienced master artists; in the fashionable Aoyama neighborhood, young international creators of cutting-edge art; and in the Toranomon business district, artists whose styles are appealing also for audiences that normally don’t have much to do with art.

Whenever artists unveil new works, they generally do so mostly at galleries, rather than at museums. The works may gain popularity, and sooner or later, be exhibited at a museum, but in either case, we believe that the firsts steps in the history of art(ists) are always taken at galleries. In that sense, curating an exhibition is always an exciting experience. One thing we usually keep in mind when planning an exhibition, is the question how we can directly communicate the world-view of an artist to those who come to see his or her exhibition. It is indeed very much a question of how to put on a good “show” that grabs and fascinates the audience. For us, this is what exhibition curation is all about.

Next to actual, physical exhibitions, we also show artworks online: ONLINE Exhibition. These are not entirely virtual affairs, but we film/photograph works on display at the real galleries (but without visitors), and publish the edited footage on the Internet. Up to now, we have produced and published more than 30 videos of exhibitions, which we consider to be a tool for communicating the essence of an artist’s work, to people who are unable to attend a physical exhibition.

We channel just as much energy into the publication of art books, as into the planning of exhibitions. In our view, the best way to appreciate works of art is to visit an exhibition and stand in front of the actual works. This, however, requires traveling to the place, at the time of the respective exhibition. When they are included in a book, as long as the book is available, one can look at the works at any time and any place. In addition, an exhibition lasts for a few months at most, before displays are dismantled and the works disappear from view, whereas a book lasts forever, unless it is burned or thrown away. Geographically, books can transport artworks to new and unknown audiences on the other side of the globe, while temporally, they may serve as bridges to those who read them ten, twenty, or even a hundred years later.

Exhibitions and books are of course two different things. The passion of an artist that one senses in the space of an exhibition, is an irreplaceable experience, so an exhibition is by far the best environment for people to connect to an artist’s own unique world. However in reality, more often than not, art books are opportunities for learning about new artists. For such books, it is the overall design, the quality of the paper, the editing of the text, that define the appearance of the book itself, and at the same time, have a significant impact on the respective artist’s rating. Even the most outstanding work of art becomes meaningless when it is included in a book that doesn’t match its quality. A book is a very physical thing. It involves the design aspects of binding, bookmaking, layout and editing, while browsing through it happens along a timeline that is defined by the speed of turning the pages with one’s fingers. For this reason, we attach importance to the production of art books as “art objects”, that embody an artist’s creative ideas while utilizing the characteristic qualities of a book, rather than putting together simple catalogues. We AKIO NAGASAWA Gallery | Publishing will continue our two-pronged activities to introduce superior artists from Japan to the world, by hosting exhibitions, and publishing art books.

ライカギャラリー東京・京都・表参道のギャラリストとして展覧会の企画・運営に従事。作品選定、構成、空間設計を一貫して手がけ、現代写真の文脈を踏まえた展示を実現している。ニューヨークの国際写真センター（ICP）で学び、アルル写真祭をはじめ欧米・アジアで作品を発表。都市の記憶や人々の営みをテーマとしたドキュメンタリーを軸に、Le Monde、Libération、The Wall Street Journal など国際媒体にも寄稿している。

A gallerist for Leica Gallery Tokyo, Kyoto, and Omotesando, responsible for the planning and execution of exhibitions. Oversees artwork selection, curatorial structure, and spatial design, delivering exhibitions grounded in the context of contemporary photography. Studied at the International Center of Photography (ICP), New York, and has exhibited at photo festivals and galleries across Europe, the United States, and Asia, including Les Rencontres d’Arles. His photographic practice focuses on documentary work exploring urban memory and human activity, with contributions to international publications such as Le Monde, Libération, and The Wall Street Journal.

インディペンデントキュレーター、Landschaft

東京大学総合文化研究科博士課程満期退学。川崎市岡本太郎美術館学芸員を経て、フリーランスとして写真評論、キュレーション、編集などを行う。2009年から20年まで東川賞受賞作家展ディレクター。

主な展覧会企画に「岡本太郎と戦後写真」展、「肉体のシュルレアリスム 舞踏家土方巽抄」（第35回舞踊批評家協会賞）、編集・構成に『吉増剛造 表紙』（第50回毎日芸術賞）。著書に『逃げ去るイメージ アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン』（第6回重森弘淹写真評論賞）など。2025年には清里フォトアートミュージム30周年記念展ゲストキュレーターをつとめた。

Independent Curator, Landschaft

After completing all course work, withdrew from the doctoral program at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. After serving as a curator at the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art in Kawasaki City, worked on a freelance basis in photography criticism, curation, and editing. Served as director of the Higashikawa Award Winners Exhibition from 2009 to 2020.

Major exhibition projects include “Taro Okamoto and Postwar Photography” and “Surrealism of the Flesh: An Anthology of Butoh Dancer Tatsumi Hijikata” (35th Dance Critics Association Award). Edited and compiled “Gozo Yoshimasu: Covers” (50th Mainichi Art Award). Publications include “Fleeing Images: Henri Cartier-Bresson” (6th Shigemori Kōen Photography Criticism Award). In 2025, served as guest curator for the Kiyosato Museum of Photo Art’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition.

She also serves as nominator to PRIX PICTET Awards, the Leica Oskar Barnack Awards (LOBA) and several major Japanese photographic awards, such as Kimura Ihei Award and Higashikawa Award, and also as jury for The Photographic Society of Japan Award in Japan from 2025.

In 2022, she was awarded the International Award of the Photographic Society of Japan in recognition of her contributions to the overseas promotion of Japanese photography over the years.

2001年から現職。2004年『Newsweek日本版』に写真で世界を伝える連載「Picture Power」を新設し、近く通算900回を迎える。2014年には写真集『10 Years of Picture Power 写真の力』を出版。

World Press Photo Contest、Sony World Photography Awardsの最終審査員、写真集『A Day in the World』（米、スウェーデン、スペインなど6カ国、2012）の共同編集などに携わり、FotoFest（米）、Hamburg Portfolio Review（独）、など、海外のポートフォリオ・レビューにも多く招聘されている。

Director of Photography at Newsweek Japan

Hideko Kataoka has been Director of Photography at Newsweek Japan, since 2001. She joined the magazine as a photographer in 1991, covering national news, social issues and portraiture of world business and cultural leaders.

As director of photography, she oversees and directs photography both for the printed and digital editions of the magazine as well as its special issues. In 2004, she created the “Picture Power” section in the magazine, a weekly photo essay that captures underreported topics from around the world. The book “Ten Years of Picture Power,” with selected photo stories from the section, was published in 2014.

Hideko is a lecturer in photojournalism and documentary photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University since 2013, and serves as a Member of the External Review Committee at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum; she conducts portfolio reviews and has served as a juror at international photography festivals and competitions such as World Press Photo,  FotoFest Meeting Place (Houston), and many others.

1950年、東京生まれ。大学卒業後、ロンドンへ向かい10年を過ごす。折からのパンクロックやニューウェイブの活況に遭遇し、生きたロンドンの姿と多くのミュージシャンを撮影する。帰国後、有名アーティストから市井の人々にまでカメラを向け、温かく清楚な作風で好評を得る。随筆家としても活躍。

Born in Tokyo in 1950. After graduating from university, he went to London and spent ten years there. He encountered the thriving punk rock and new wave scenes of the time, photographing the living spirit of London and many musicians. After returning to Japan, he turned his camera on everyone from famous artists to ordinary people, gaining acclaim for his warm and refined style.

東京を拠点に活動する写真家。

出来事が風景の中にどのように埋め込まれているのかを主題とし、ポートレートと風景を往復しながら作品を制作している。 小笠原諸島を中心とした長期プロジェクトを展開し、開拓、占領、返還、核配備といった出来事が、いかに不可視化され風景の中に残されているのかを探ってきた。欧米系島民のアイデンティティを主題とした『The Bonin Islanders』（2021年、赤々舎）を刊行。 『Mary Had a Little Lamb』（2024年、赤々舎）では、米軍占領下の父島に配備された核弾頭貯蔵庫を撮影し、出来事の痕跡を提示した。同作により、第49回木村伊兵衛写真賞を受賞。

Shinichiro Nagasawa is a photographer based in Tokyo.

His work explores how events are embedded within the landscape, moving between portraiture and landscape in his practice.

Focusing on the Ogasawara Islands, he has developed a long-term project examining how events such as colonization, occupation, reversion, and nuclear deployment have been rendered invisible yet remain inscribed in the landscape. He published The Bonin Islanders (2021, 赤々舎), which centers on the identity of Western-descendant islanders.

In Mary Had a Little Lamb (2024, 赤々舎), Nagasawa photographed nuclear warhead storage sites on Chichijima during the period of U.S. military occupation, presenting traces of events embedded in the landscape. For this work, he received the 49th Kimura Ihei Photography Award.

下北沢 (東京) に生まれ、高校時代からアメリカで暮らし始める。ロイター通信社を経て、テンプル大学 Tyler School of Art にて MFA in Photography を所得。帰国後、テンプル大学のジャパンキャンパスにアート専攻を新設することを提案し、学科の立ち上げを行う。現在は、テンプル大学+昭和女子大学による日米グローバルキャンパスにて、「アート写真」の講座以外にも「写真の理論と実践」「コミュニティアート」などを担当中。

近年の写真展覧会として「作例 -- よくある質問と消えていく写真の言葉 (2022, Place M)」があり、毎年開催されている RICOH THETA (360度カメラ) 公式写真展「Beauty is all around」の審査員と展覧会のキュレーションを担当。ドラマトゥルク参加の劇場作品「T/IT: 不寛容について」が京都芸術センター、茅野市民会館で上演。Adobeフォトことはじめ講座の講師を2020年から勤めている

Photographer, Educator, Dramaturge

Born in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, Shinya B began living in the United States during high school. After working at Reuters news agency, he received an MFA in photography from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Upon returning to Japan, he proposed the establishment of an art major at Temple University's Japan Campus and launched the program. Currently, he teaches courses such as "Photography Theories and Practices" and "Community Art," in addition to "Art Photography" at the joint Japanese-American global campus of Temple University and Showa Women's University in Tokyo.

In recent years, he has curated and served as a jury for the annual RICOH THETA (360-degree camera) official photo exhibition "Beauty is all around," and held his own photography exhibition titled "Sakurei - Sakurei -- Commonly Asked Questions and the Words Disappearing from Photography" at Place M in 2022. He also participated in the theater production "T/IT: Regarding Intolerance," which was shown at the Kyoto Art Center and the Chino Civic Hall. He has been a photo lecturer for Adobe Inc. since 2020.

スティーブンは、世界各地における地域性や個人的なテーマと強く結びついた作品に強い関心を持ち、写真が持つ包摂的かつ知的な力を信じている。

He has been an active supporter of photography education and personal development especially in South East Asia and has participated in portfolio reviews and workshops at several international photo festivals. He sits regularly in juries at international awards, recently in the Romano Cagnoni Award, POY Asia, Earth Photo and Dodho.com.

He actively participates in international photography events as jury, portfolio reviewer, mentor and workshop leads. He acted as nominator for the World Press Photo 6X6 Global Talent Program and Leica Oskar Barnack Award (LOBA).

Steven is keen to see work that has strong connections about local and personal issues from all over the world and believes in the inclusive and informative power of photography.

Based in the United Kingdom, Steven is also a photographer who began his career in fashion and portraiture, as well as travel documentary work in the early 2000s, and has self-published several books. His next photo book Symbolik is scheduled for launch in late 2025.
